Scottsdale

Described by The New York Times as “a desert version of Miami’s South Beach” with “plenty of late night partying and a buzzing hotel scene,” the beautiful city of Scottsdale in Maricopa County, Arizona has a bustling population of about 241,000 residents. Scottsdale offers upscale tourist and shopping attractions and is designed to represent the western American style. Scottsdale’s climate is relatively arid, with mild winters and hot summers. Temperatures in Scottsdale range from as low as forty degrees Fahrenheit in the winter to as high as 105 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. Many residents also have convenient access to the nearby city of Phoenix to the west.

The city is loosely divided into four districts, including South Scottsdale, Old Town (Downtown) Scottsdale, Central Scottsdale, and North Scottsdale. Housing in the city is relatively expensive due to the majority of luxury houses. The real estate market in Scottsdale was among the top ten markets in the nation for luxury home sales in 2005, with $594 million in luxury home sales. South Scottsdale is home to a majority of the working class in Scottsdale, but it is also transforming into a dynamic urban area. South Scottsdale offers most of the city’s nightlife attractions and is a major art center. Housing prices in South Scottsdale average $291,500, while median home prices in North Scottsdale are $667,450. Old Town Scottsdale contains old fashioned shops, restaurants, clubs, bars, and art galleries. The district is also home to the Scottsdale Fashion Square mall, which is one of the twenty largest high-end malls in the nation. The area has also experienced a revival, with new condominiums and hotels being constructed in the area. Central Scottsdale contains the most highly-desired housing in the city, and is also home to a area known as the Resort Corridor due to the numerous resorts located on the same street. North Scottsdale is the most actively developed region of Scottsdale and has the most expensive homes in the region, with many exceeding $5 million in value. Much of the boom in North Scottsdale is a result of the fast growth of Scottsdale Airpark, which is the second largest employment center in the Phoenix area, and is expected to become the largest by 2010.
